Office of Laboratory Animal Care
Background
The University of California, Berkeley, seeks an experienced
laboratory animal veterinarian to direct the Office of Laboratory Animal Care (OLAC)
and oversee the institutions animal resources program. The Berkeley campus
facilitates a wide range of animal research involving a diverse population of
animals (69% rodents, 30% ectothermic species and 1% non-rodent mammals and

Responsibilities
The Director reports to the Vice Chancellor for Research and
is responsible for managing an exemplary program of laboratory animal care and
use on the Berkeley campus that complies with federal, state and local animal
welfare regulations.
Specific duties include:

Manage a staff of 50 full time equivalent employees with direct
supervision of 3 full time state licensed veterinarians, 4 animal health
technicians, 4 facility managers and 1 office manager.
·
Manage an annual budget of $4M consisting of $2M in state funds
and an additional $2M in estimated revenue income.
·
Manage 72,000 assignable square feet of animal housing facilities
(expected to increase to 100,000 by 2012) in several locations and a 23 acre
field station.
·
Maintain a consistently high level of quality in the care and use
of animals in research and teaching in compliance with all federal, state and
local laws and regulations.
·
Assist in animal research protocol reviews and the development of
campus policies in support of an exemplary animal care and use program.
·
Advise and train campus scientists, students and technical staff
to ensure animal protocols are followed.
·
Act as an advocate and spokesperson for the campus at the local,
regional and national levels on issues relating to animal care and use.
·
Develop and maintain productive working relationships with campus
faculty, students, and staff and the general public and the surrounding
community.
·
Assist in maintaining an effective occupational health and safety
plan for the campus to ensure compliance with Cal OSHA guidelines and
requirements.
·
Provide leadership in organizing the campus response to
accreditation visits by the AAALAC.
·
Participate in the design and development of animal facilities for
new and remodeled buildings under construction.
·
Serve as a member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use
Committee (IACUC).
·
Based on background and experience, may perform independent and
collaborative research and teaching duties.
Requirements
·
DVM from an accredited school of veterinary medicine.
·
Valid license to practice veterinary medicine (preferably
California).
·
USDA Veterinary Accreditation and ACLAM board certificate.
·
Thorough knowledge of all federal
and state regulatory requirements and AAALAC recommendations pertaining to the
care and use of animals in research and teaching.
·
Minimum of five years successful
experience managing in a multi-species, multi-disciplinary academic environment.
·
Demonstrated leadership and
management skills.
·
Excellent communication and
interpersonal skills.
·
Demonstrated ability to establish
and maintain collaborative relationships with diverse individuals while
providing and ensuring quality veterinary care and programmatic and regulatory
compliance.
·
Successful clearance of a UC
Criminal Background Check (prior to first day of work).
